Hoshigaki happens!

At least, I think it does. Out of 16 fruit peeled and hung to dry, three escaped squirrels and raccoons and remain free of mold. They’re developing the frosted, sugary coating characteristic of hoshigaki and are looking appropriately lean and shriveled. Yay!

Last week I tried starting a new batch. Hanging inside quickly proved a mold risk, so I whisked the survivors outside to the tree (where I started that first batch successfully). BOOM! GONE! Wild animals chewed them off the strings as soon as they began to soften.

Today I’m going to buy a folding clothes rack to rig up a drying station inside…
